Lao Jungle Honey

The house:

Lao Jungle Honey Co., Ltd currently occupies this small house in the village of Khone Keo, on the north end of Houay Xai. Modest, even by Lao standards, it has an Asian toilet and no hot water.  Showers are taken with a plastic scoop and the water contained in the cistern.  There was initially a bamboo kitchen facility to the rear of the house, but it fell over, because the termites ate it. Otherwise, the house has a bedroom, storefront (now storage and sleeping area), living room and a storage room.  The rent is about $360.00 a year.  Utilities are inexpensive-water is approximately 20 cents a month and electricity is 80 cents a month.

The village of Khone Keo, although part of the city of Houay Xai, has no paved roads.  This modest dirt road is typical for the village.

This is a typical Lao bathroom. The cistern contains water that is used to flush the toilet. Cold showers are also taken with water from the cistern, using the scoop.

Located on the NE edge of Houay Xai, the jungle butts up against the village. Though lush, it displays 2nd or 3rd growth jungle, the original having been clear-cut long ago.
